HTML & CSS How can I control background color via .css file?

If I do it inline, in my html, I can just put somewhere in my header
background-color: lightgrey;
right?
However, I want to put it in my CSS document. Would I put it under a class? Just plop it in the CSS document at the top?
Im not sure.
