HTML & CSS How to Properly refactor your code using Semantic Elements HTML & CSS

jmory

Coder
Hi Everyone, I am starting out on learning how to code and I simply am at a total loss or confusion. I need to be able to refactor code using semantic elements in HTML & CSS. I cant figure out where to break each section or where to use its proper semantic element so that its not using so many DIV.

HTML:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en-us">

<head>
    <meta charset="UTF-8" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="./assets/css/style.css">
    <title>website</title>
</head>

<body>
    <div class="header">
        <h1>Hori<span class="seo">seo</span>n</h1>
        <div>
            <ul>
                <li>
                    <a href="#search-engine-optimization">Search Engine Optimization</a>
                </li>
                <li>
                    <a href="#online-reputation-management">Online Reputation Management</a>
                </li>
                <li>
                    <a href="#social-media-marketing">Social Media Marketing</a>
                </li>
            </ul>
        </div>
    </div>
    <div class="hero"></div>
    <div class="content">
        <div class="search-engine-optimization">

            <p>
                The dominance of mobile internet use means that users are searching for the right business as they travel, shop, or sit on their couch at home. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) allows you to increase your visibility and find the right customers for your business.

            <h2>Online Reputation Management</h2>
            <p>
                The web is full of opinions, and some of these can be negative. Social media allows anyone with an internet connection to say whatever they want about your business. Online Reputation Management gives you the control over what potential customers see when they search for your business.
            </p>

        <div id="social-media-marketing" class="social-media-marketing">

            <p>
                Social media continues to have a sizable influence on buying habits. Social media marketing helps you determine which platforms are suited to your brand, using analytics to find the right markets and increase your lead generation.

Hi jmory,
Just wondering where you're studying programming because the code you published is wonky. No proper school would use or teach this code. If you are still here we can talk about it. I'll wait for you to reply to this thread.

Can you specify what makes this code wonky ? It runs without console errors for me (except for the images not being found, obviously), and the W3C Online validator reports only some unimportant issues (about trailing slashes and missing alt attribute on images).

@jmory: The CSS validator at CSS Validator - CSS Portal reports quite a bunch of issues. By all means fix those, it will already help cleaning up some of the redundancy.

All you have to do is read the code.
That I did. I saw nothing untoward in the HTML. It looks correct and tidy, if maybe somewhat old-fashioned.
The CSS contains a lot of redundancy and two invalid attributes. Is what you meant with wonky ?
