Technically there is a way to go back. Install an older version. Especially on rooted devices this is possible. I still have Android 5.1.1 devices and am probably not updating any time soon. Did you know some devices can only update to a set level? With some devices you will have to update to get in as a user after a new operating system install. If you are trying for updating beyond normal capacity, try LineageOS or CyanogenMod. Those are like Android but different.
