Keeping Your Windows Computer running efficiently

There's a lot of history in Windows and the consumers that have for decades tried to download the latest software or modify settings. The go-to system that always worked was to just reinstall the os. Now the programming is improving at each Windows version. Here's the programs and settings I found over the years to work the best. I've learned from the older generations as we all do, so I look forward to the replies of more knowledgeable insights.

Ccleaner Registry Cleanup - This registry cleanup utility has seemed to stand the test of time for a clean that I can't find as easily anywhere else to produce a fast computer when all the other utilities have been performed and there's still more to be done.

Malwarebytes - I haven't used this much recently but the software always seems to be updated and relevant.

ZoneAlarm - If I was really concerned or ran an operation that needed additional security I would be using this. There are many settings and it's easy to use and stays relevant.

After cleaning cookies and temporary files in disk cleanup and having (all) of the disks defragmented, I find the computer still has work to do in the background. There are some posts out there that consumers have problems with the CPU fan. I figured out the solution for my computer was to have it logged in to the Administrator account and left on. The os seems to only be able to clear whatever processing needs to be done on the Admin account. I'm sure you can just lock the computer once it's logged in and disable the sleep function so it can perform the tasks it needs to. This is only said because sometimes users will just run Windows on a second standard account for more security or always sleep the computer when not in use.

I still find I have to reinstall a user account if I use it too much, but it seems like I don't have to reinstall the os completely like previous versions.

Another setting that I use frequently to clear up Apps is in Settings - Apps - Select App (that is not working) - Advanced Options - Terminate and then Repair. Reset if it still isn't working.

Hi there,
Malwarebytes is most definitely a great tool for malware cleanup. They also have a browser extension that works wonders for malicious site blocking, ad blocking, tracker blocking, etc. When it comes to security, a great recommendation is Glasswire. The beauty of Glasswire is that it allows you to see what apps connect to the network and has a great firewall functionality. Think of it as the more visual representation of Wireshark, which is another great tool for sniffing your network traffic.

As far as maintenance is concerned, yes, make sure to clear browser cache, make sure you disable the apps that you don't need to run at startup, and make sure to clear the "prefetch" folder by following the guide here: How to Delete Temporary Files and Delete Prefetch Files from Your Computer
