What are the first steps to start building a Wordpress template?

I am going to build a new Wordpress template for my Wordpress site but I have no more experience on this, I tried to look into a paid WP theme out there with hopes to learn codes from them but that was so complicated. I need somethings simpler. Can you tell me what are the first steps to start building a Wordpress template?

I'm not to experienced in building WordPress either - But I'd start with planning the layout and tools you're going use, create some of the images you'd need etc, then start to work on the WordPress template.
