JavaScript Inserting a variable into a string

TTC

New Coder
Complete beginner, taking a JavaScript course on codecademy, the following problem has me stuck: Whenever I try to insert a variable into a string, teh dollar sign and curly brackets stay the same colour as the string and I get a syntax error whenever I try to run it. Even though the variable is already declared above, I type console.log, inside the parentheses I open the string ' and it goes yellow but when I type ${}, it stays the same color, even though I close the string with `.

How can I put a variable inside a string?
Thanks
