Suggestion User-Ranks

I know it sounds like a useless Feature but wouldn't it be nice to maybe have User-Ranks?

What I mean is look at @ForwardWeb - Branden. He has a [Contributor] Rank. And the Administrators and Moderators have the [Administrator] and [Moderator] Ranks.

As for more Ranks, maybe you could do:
  • [Open-Sourcerer] - This is given to Users who have an Open-Source Project under CodeForum.org
  • [Programming-Assistant] - This is given to Users who a lot of other Users find very helpful
Those two were just some Ideas for what you could do for Ranks.

Again, I know it sounds useless but maybe it can improve a User's Reputation. Who knows. But of course, you don't have to add it.

This would definitely require some input / a decision from Malcolm, but since we're discussing ranks here, I do want to mention that I think some color changes would be nice. Some of the rank colors are actually quite difficult to see on this theme. They need to be a bit lighter in my opinion. The Moderator username color & Contributor purple are both a bit too dark - at least on my work monitor.

Thank you for your suggestion! If Malcolm does not stop in soon I will let him know :)

Yeah, I'll just do this to get @Malcolms attention.

So, @Malcolm. What do you think? Do you think you should add User-Ranks?

I love the idea and thought about doing something similar to this not too long ago. I was thinking that depending on 'How many best answers' you had you would automatically get promoted to a particular group that had unique colours etc.

My only concern is that I do want a new guest to come to Code Forum and see a sea of coloured groups. I guess with open sourced projects it won't be too many as it would have to get approved. As for Programming-Assistant, I think if I were to make it where after maybe like 20-30 best answers then you are promoted to this group.

Tell me what you think?

Well, yes. That is true. A Guest may come along and find a ton of Users with little Tags next to their Name. That is one problem but if we do it right then we can lower the amount of Users who may have a Tag.

As for Programming-Assistant, I do think that maybe between 35 - 50 Best Answers is a good amount to give somebody that Tag/Rank. You can do it lower or higher, your choice.

And again, it's all up to you if you want to add them. Your call.

I agree, if we do it right, we shouldn't have an issue. I think just a coloured username will be good enough.

I think what you said is best 35-50, gives members a bit of challenge and encourages them to provide a better enough answer.

I saw an add-on not too long ago where you can set your moods, so I was thinking of perhaps customizing it to be like currently Programming etc. Still figuring it out

I even wonder if groups with certain requirements (to join) might be a good fit.
That way you can have your normal rank, but join groups & choose to display 1 group "banner" below your username.
This would eliminate the username color bloat, allow users to earn their way into groups (such as Open Source Developers with a cool OS logo banner or a Contributor group which is invite-only by Malcolm), and still show off their hard work with the banner below the user title / rank banner.

I don't want to derail the thread because you all have made some great suggestions and Malcolm is already keen on the idea it seems, but I do think that groups can often be a great fit instead of having multiple ranks which can make permissions & multiple ranks difficult to implement long term.

I really love that Idea.

I think Groups would be a really good Idea that could work out much better than just generic, Ranks.

@Malcolm, what do you think? Groups or just User-Ranks?

There is an add-on XenForo which does enable groups where members can join as they please. But this is something I might get behind for when Code Forum gets bigger in size and when we can upgrade to groups that members can join.

So, @Malcolm.

Any Progress-Updates on this? Now please, do takey your time and don't rush it. And if you're busy then that's completely understandable. I just want to know the current stance on this.

Oh yeah, what about this? Do you plan on adding Moods? Maybe you could add them alongside the Ranks.

I do apologize for the delay, a new group was created called "Trusted Members" (Looking for a more suitable name), where if you have 50 best answers you'll automatically be promoted to this user group. I completely forgot to mention this.

I still have to research into this, but what I was thinking was based on what your top skill is you can change it say if you're skilled more in HTML, then you'd select your mood as HTML etc.

Say, anymore Updates at the moment? Just checking in to make sure that you still remember this.

But again, take your time with it.
