Happy New Year to everyone at CodeForum.org.

Let's hope that this year, we can reach at least 300 Members this year, have less spam and have more questions asked and answered. Alongside that, more tutorials for others to learn from.

Again, a Happy New Year to you all.

300?? What a low number, I think 400! And for the spam, agreed!

Well, the user-base growth has essentially stalled with a sign-up every so often. So, I doubt that we'll reach 400 users by the end of this year, unless we have some sort of boom in popularity and activity.

As for spam, it's an occurring issue that needs to be dealt with. Consider making verification a little bit more difficult to pass and add additional questions. Maybe also see if there's a modification for XenForo that can detect spam-bots.

Outside of advertising on other forums which usually isnt allowed, I usually think of these sites as slow-growth sites anyway, what matters is the content and reliability, if people knows they can get answers quickly here they will bookmark the site immediately....I did :p

Well, mind you. Back in the late 1990's and early 2000's, forums were essentially at their peek. It was only with the public launch of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Reddit that forums essentially moved to the forests of the internet. They remain there, largely forgotten about until somebody wanders past and decides to look inside the cabin(Forum) to see what's in it.

Yeah, of course. That happens from time to time but take a look at the past year we grew 250+! I think it’s possible to get to 400! Always shoot high! And if we don’t reach 400, then we will try again! :)

At this point, there’s nothing we can do. We already have verification methods, all that really needs to be done is keep a close eye. Report posts that are spam and the spammer will be dealt with. Spam is a really tricky thing to stop. But we can deal with it to a certain degree.

I currently advertise via google ads, discord and word of mouth (which I finds to be the most efficient). Defiantly, and that’s why I encourage everyone to do their best in answering others. Even if you don’t know the answer, help troubleshoot!

Well, you aim to what you wanna get to. I'm just throwing in my predictions.

Well, the least you can do is make a more complex verification question. Just avoid adding reCaptcha as that's a threat(In terms of privacy. Plus, it can easily be bypassed so it's worthless). Although, the spam seems to have silenced in the past couple of weeks so maybe that's a sign. We'll have to see what we do in the future though.

Well, at least you put effort into advertising. The more money you have then the more you can spend on ads(Just don't overspend though).

I also think that the more questions we have here on CF then depending on what the user specifically searches for, a question from CF itself will pop-up in results.

Always aim high! I have high hopes for Code Forum, and I think we'll get there. We got to 250, so I definitely think we can get to 400 easily!

Yeah, I added more complex questions recently. So I think that may have helped significantly, I disabled reCaptcha a long time ago when a privacy issue was brought to my attention by @Tealk. Yeah, spam is tricky because you can do everything you can to try to prevent it but it will always find its way. Because I look at it as there are two different types of spammers: bot, which we can ultimately get rid of, but then there are human spammers. Which are almost impossible to stop, because it's like for example you can choose to just start posting spam. All we can do is keep an eye out for it.

Yeah, of course. I have an advertising budget. I'm hoping to do more advertising in the near future, but would rather focus on my current base as of right now. But, it's all a balancing game.

I agree. I definitely want more questions.

Ah, I don't remember reCaptcha being a thing here when I first signed-up. But, I'm glad that you don't plan to add it in again(At least, I hope so).

In today's WWW, there really is no way around spam. When you create a new system, they find a way extremely fast. Have severely complex questions, they'll solve them in no time.

I guess you just need to keep on adding more questions and hoping for a more open Captcha that is much better than the Captchas that we have at our disposal.

Well, when you're a small site like CF, that's when it is tricky. But, if you get donations or a better job to pay for everything, including ads then you can quickly increase growth which can lead to users being encouraged to post more.

I wouldn't recommend going beyond $250 CAD until you have a good job that pays well, start-up a donation place for CF and that you're userbase is at 450-500+ members.

Well, if I'm correct, we have gotten quite a few good questions in the past few days. If that keeps up then we can start hitting the top results in terms of SEO fast.

Hahaha long time ago! Nope, not going to!

Exactly, the best thing we can do is like you said to have more questions and have moderators be on their toes!

My max for advertising is actually $250 CAD, I'm not sure if I will. It's something I thought about but figured that holding a can that says Donations was never a good way to earn money, you get what I mean?

We have, and I hope we can get even more! I noticed activity is starting to pick up again so I'm looking forward to it!

I don't know what it's like outside of Germany ( because I don't run a multilingual forum), but in germany the willingness to donate to forums is zero.
But donations, if not through PayPal or other services, is the only way to get money without selling data.

Yeah, I've never really done it before. And I don't feel like begging for money, it's just not right.

Well, you don't need to beg for it of course. It's up to the user if they want to donate or not. The only time it's "begging" is when there's pop-ups asking for donations or you're forcing people to donate to get access to certain parts of the site. That's when it's begging.

I see your point. Thank you for the information!

So I donate a lot to organizations, Netzpolitik.org, GFF, Open knowledge foundation.

I think that a donation pot is not a begging but an opportunity for users to make a contribution.

It's called paymant will, which is not begging but rather blackmail.

I really appreciate the information, it gives me incredible insight thank you!
