You should be using https/SSL no matter what now.

If you want to stay with the program, and actually get an increase in SEO, you should be using SSL. There's no excuse. Let's Encrypt offers free SSL certificates and it's pretty damn easy to install if you just follow the instructions.

I make all my sites to https. After doing so I noticed a slight increase in SEO and it gives me peace of mind knowing that there isn't anything funny going on like people redirecting your traffic or snooping around where they shouldn't

I’m not sure where I’ve heard this, hopefully some can conform now. But google apparently is only displaying websites with HTTPS/SSL on google search and on chrome marking sites with just HTTP as not secure.

I personally have SSL/https on all my sites (including this one).

I completely agree! SSL is so important for your site and is basically the new standard. People want to feel secure when they visit your site, and nothing is easier than setting up a LetsEncrypt cert. and pushing HTTPS.

Anyone wanting to learn more about why SSL is important can read more on Google Developers

Thanks for sharing, David! It's also interesting you mentioned the impact of using SSL on your SEO. Forcing HTTPS indeed, does, infect your SEO score and affects the way search engines rank your site.

I agree all sites these days should have SSL. As a matter of fact paypal won't even process payments anymore unless the site does have SSL. Lets Encrypt is a good option, however if your site runs Cloudflare then you should be using their built in SSL instead because their free SSL is signed by Comodo so it's better than Lets Encrypt in my opinion. I used to try and figure out if I should use Lets Encrypt and Cloudflare at the same time but later discovered that it was better to just use their built in SSL because Comodo is the most famous SSL provider on the net

I totally agree with this. I find the pricing for SSLs now are pretty reasonable so I don’t see why you shouldn’t have one.

Exactly, I’ve used the free ones from time to time via cPanel and have never had anything issues with them.

Do you have Cloudflare? If not I really suggest you run your servers on CF mainly because it's free unmitigated DDoS protection and also protection from hackers. You can use their built in SSL

I was using SSL on all my sites before it was cool. Js...

I rememebr back in the day when there use to be big arguments about only using SSL when you have transactions or important user information being sent. Im like nah bro, always use SSL regardless.

Not to mention, back then it was a sign of "trust" with that green padlock. Now it's just so standard, and most browsers are getting rid of the green padlock unless you buy business verification.

Thankfully there are some great free solutions for this. I've been using LetsEncrypt for a while now and it's just amazing especially since my host takes care of it and I don't have to do anything to renew it or configure it etc.

I don't really like it - because a lot of sites aren't selling things. Also, and more importantly - it massively adds to the cost (and renewal) of a domain, in fact, often doubling it.

Anyhow, nowadays, expect a .com to REALLY cost around $20.
