Are HTML & CSS necessary to learn?

Hey everyone,

I'm early into my coding journey, starting with Python via CS50. I'm curious to see where my journey takes me, but the plan for now is to try to focus and "go deep" - developing a good foundation in Python, before studying a second language like Javascript. All being well, I'm curious to land a junior job/contract as a developer.

I've noticed that lots of courses offer a "broad look" at lots of different languages, often starting with the "basic languages" of front-end, HTML and CSS.

My question is... how important is it to study HTML & CSS? Can you get away with not doing so? Or are they absolutely necessary for front-end development? I'm curious to ask, as I'm wanting to be efficient with my learning.

Thank you!

If you are interested about backend only, then its not relevant. But other than that, atleast basics of CSS should be good to know. In any mean CSS and/or HTML are not so hard that you cant get the basics pretty fast.

W3Schools has pretty neat tutorials for both. Well explained and you can try codes out right there in browser to understand it better.

Depends on what you are looking at as far as a career. Ultimately, they are good to have, but you can get away with not knowing anything frontend related if you're just going to be strictly backend (server-side, databases, devops). However, nowadays given the fact the internet has become an essential part of life, I highly doubt you can or will remain "clueless" regarding html and css

@EkBass and @Antero360, thank you both. I remember looking at CSS/HTML on W3Schools a few years ago when I had a Wordpress blog. I'm not sure what I want to do as yet career-wise (it's too early, just following my curiosities); as you say - they are basic enough & the internet is important enough to give them a looking.
