I heard cnames are a redirecting site lets say bit.ly goes to bitly.com etc. But Do cnames need a server to be hosted on to redirect to sites?

As far as hosting is concerned, cname records must be hosted on the same server as your application/site
Thanks for the extra information.Cname records are usually handled by the hosting service you use, which they typically give you access to so that you can edit that yourself... unless you're self hosting
