CSS Found something unexplainable

I gave squaredle a makeover with Stylus, a friend made me conscious of the stars, and I found some unexplainable properties in that CSS code.

How does fill: url(#half); work?
I'd also like to color the stars in another color than red without going too far into that half-star territory.
