little help with arduino pro mini programming error

StudentMasterWho here,

I am trying to build a functional sonic screwdriver using Arduino pro mini version 5v 16mhz.
when i tried to upload code to the board using an ftdi basic there was an error message.

error message as follows: stk500_recv(): programmer not responding

FTDI Basic 5v board came from sparkfun while the board in question came from a company called deek robot.

since i am looking for solutions and answers to my problem I might as well ask:

1. what kind of error is stk500_recv(): programmer not responding?
