Running Local AI Models on a Laptop: How Much RAM and GPU VRAM Do You Really Need?

I've been looking into running AI models locally instead of relying entirely on cloud-based tools. It's interesting how much the hardware can affect the experience, especially when working with larger language models.

One thing I'm curious about is how much difference RAM and GPU memory actually make in everyday use. For example, would a laptop with 32GB RAM be a reasonable starting point for experimenting with smaller local models, or does GPU VRAM matter much more?

I know the answer probably depends on the model size, quantization, and the tools being used, but I'd like to hear from people who have actually experimented with local AI setups.

A few questions:
  • Do you prefer running smaller models locally or using cloud-based AI services?
  • Which matters more in your experience: system RAM or GPU VRAM?
  • Have you managed to get useful results from local models on a regular laptop?
  • What hardware would you recommend to someone getting started?
Would be great to hear about some real-world setups and experiences.
