Suggestion Off Topic Forum

Would it be possible to create an Off-Topic area?
Such contributions could then be placed there: Iced Coffee

Then you would have the possibility to ignore off topic.

Once I get this moderation policy out and is approved by the community I may modify rules so that General Discussions is to be used as tech related discussions only.

I wanna stay away from off topic forums as I strictly want it to be coding/tech related.

I do agree with @Malcolm on this matter.

I think it would be great to modify the Rules of the Community Hub and dedicate to just general-stuff about Technology and Programming. And besides, there's literally a General-Discussion Board on every Forum and they provide nothing interesting. You'll even find them on Sites like CodeForum, ForumPromotion and a bunch of other Forums. All they're there for is to provide a place for Users to chat about anything, even on a Forum in which general chit-chats wouldn't fit-in.

If the general talk board is used as a free for all discussion board, people who signup to help or get help, might end up spending more time there than on the rest of the forum. I like the idea of the general board being more tech related in it's discussions, as it will allow people to discuss things that relate to the forum, without going too far off track.

But this also means you lose activity.
I don't agree with this.

Not every Forum has to have a General-Discussion Area. CF falls under a common Forum-Niche and I'm sure that a lot of Tech Forums I've seen have a General-Discussion Area. And CF is probably the first I've seen that only enforce Tech-Related Chats in a General-Discussion Board.

In fact, there is just as much Activity as there is in CFs General Board.

More topics, more discussions.
Yeah, a General-Discussion Board can start more Discussions. But @Malcolm has stated that he wants to keep the current General-Discussion Board for only Tech-Related stuff. Besides, the General-Discussion Board does have a lot of Threads in it.

We could potentially make a new forum for 'off-topic' discussions down in The Hub. What are your thoughts on this?

My only concern was that I could ignore off topic. That works best if it is then in its own area.

Well, we could. But then wouldn't that mean that you back-track on your word of 'Keeping Discussions Tech related'? I'm fine with an Off-Topic Board but I'd prefer to keep it Tech-Related only. Not to mention that Off-Topic Boards could potentially take away a lot of Discussions from the rest of the Boards.

Well, I'd probably have restrictions to as what will be pushed to members. For example, posts within this 'Off-topic' forum will not count toward your stats. And will not be displayed in the Advanced Forum Stats add-on.

So basically if you want to participate then make sure you keep an eye on it.

Yeah, if you do go ahead with the Off-Topic Board then do make sure that it does not count towards a Users Statistics. That could maybe make them Post less there and force them to Discuss and Chat in the main parts of CF.

Add more tech-related categories.
The problem with this is that if we start creating more and more forums. It makes the forum look empty and not active.

We can only add more forums if there is a demand for them.

I'm with @Malcolm and it's that if we add more Boards that people aren't asking for then it's worthless and it makes the Forum look a bit empty. But that's an entirely different story for when there is demand for a Board.

If there is demand for a Board and people are obviously going to be posting there then it's worth adding as it starts more Discussions and increases the chances of somebody discovering CF when they search for something related to that Board. But when a Board that nobody asked for gets added then what was the point in adding it?

If somebody has an idea for a Board but there sort of is a demand then a Poll might be able to help and see if people are interested in that Board being added.
Add more tech-related categories.
If by 'More', you mean a crap-ton that nobody asked for or are not interested in then no. It's best if we add more Boards as we go along. Maybe add new Boards every 4 - 20 Months. That's a nice pace to add Boards at and maybe once that new Board is added in that time period, there might be a demand for that Board's Subject.
