C++ Calling AI APIs from C++: best practices for HTTP & JSON

I’ve been experimenting with calling AI APIs in C++. libcurl for HTTP and nlohmann::json for parsing worked fine—once I remembered to wrap everything in try-catch. Otherwise, the AI replies faster than my app crashes.

Anyone got other favorite libraries or patterns?

If you’re just experimenting, your current setup with libcurl + nlohmann::json is already a solid baseline.
A couple of other combos you might like:
  • cpp-httplib + nlohmann::json - super simple, all header-only, great for quick projects.
  • Boost.Beast + RapidJSON - more robust and performant if you’re planning something bigger or async.
  • simdjson - crazy fast parsing if you’ll be chewing through large responses.

Patterns worth considering:
  • Wrap requests in a small RAII wrapper class so you don’t leak handles.
  • Add retry with exponential backoff—AI APIs will sometimes drop a request.
  • Use a queue or async future pattern so networking doesn’t block your main thread.
If you’re going heavier into production, having a retry/rate limit layer on top of the HTTP client would be ideal.
