Particle simulator / Monitor troubles.

eMonolith

Coder
I am playing with a particle simulator I coded and have found that particles can accelerate to speeds that the monitor has trouble displaying. For instance, if I have two particles traveling around the screen, their interaction can cause them to accelerate so fast that it appears that there are four particles on the screen.
Do I need a better monitor?

Depends about your screen.

FPS cant be higher than Hz of your monitor.

That is actually one thing that pops out. New, stupid fast graphics driver on old monitor.

Though, depending of source, human eye sees something between 30 to 80 FPS. Faster monitor is waste of money by this sense.
60FPS is widely considered to be speed where motion is smooth for human eye/brains combination.

Maximum refresh of my monitor is 60Hz. By using a smaller time step for the simulator, particles don't look like they are hopping around, but the sim runs slower. At this point, I don't know what to ask or how to continue.

You can either get monitor with faster Hz, or simply adjust the sim itself.
You can draw the particles after each second turn. Makes maybe a bit bouncy, but maybe you can live with it.

There is monitors that can go up to 240Hz, or even more. But they are not cheap.
