Confused! Clear it for me.

PHPBB is a Forum-Software that is built using the PHP Programming-Language. Despite the Name, PHPBB and PHP are not related.

PHPBB is used for Forums. PHP is used to Program Sites so that things like Media-Content can be Posted by Users.

No problem! MAny other softwares are made with PHP too!
MyBB, XenForo, WordPress, the original Facebook, i *think* Craigslist, and so much more. PHP runs most web software, but sites like Netflix and Reddit show that Python and other languages have a solid place in web development and services too.

i *think* Craigslist

Nope. Apparently Craigslist is written in Perl. Even Wikipedia says it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craigslist
(But of course, the Vailidity of Wikipedia is always up for Debate).

the original Facebook

Should also note that Facebook still is, written in PHP. Again, Wikipedia says it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook
Mind you, Facebook does use a few other Languages such as C++ and D.

Yip. That is true.

APIs like Django can be used for Web-Development with Python and it's proven to be successful. So you don't always have to use PHP but it is the choice for things like Forums. Other Languages for Web-Development can be Perl, Java and C++(Apparently anyway. Not sure though). So you have a wide variety of Languages other than PHP that can be used for your Projects.
