Programming convolution

Hi, i need to use matlab to program a convolution of signals by using
1) the convolution function
2) inputting code that makes the system perform the convolution from the mathematical principles
i can do the first one, but i don't understand how to program the intergral as i don't understand how it works. I've watched several videos, but i am stuck. ANy advice would be appreciated
