CSS Vertical align with 'old school' CSS

I'm trying to accomplish something like this in a header without using flexbox. But I can't get the navigation menu on the right to align with the bottom of the text on the left. Shouldn't this be a fairly easy thing to do with position:relative or vertical-align?

HTML:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<style>
body {margin: 0 20%;}
.container {overflow: hidden;}
.logo {font-size: 2.5em; float: left;}
.container ul {float: right;}
.container li {margin-left: 0.5em; display: inline;}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div class="container">
<div class="logo">Here goes<br>two lines of text</div>
<ul>
<li><a href="#item-1">Item 1</a></li>
<li><a href="#item-2">Item 2</a></li>
<li><a href="#item-3">Item 3</a></li>
</ul>
</div>
</body>
</html>

You won't be able to achieve this with 'old' CSS techniques without adding in some quite specific spacing to your code. That's why flex box is best because it'll automatically space things out properly.

If you're sure about not using flex box then I'd suggest adding a margin to your unordered list. That's the easiest way although not ideal.
.container ul { float: right; margin: 36px 0; }
I measured and 36px seems to get the menu nicely centred.
